Dating A Best Friend

I recently came back from my vacation in the Caribbeans. It was very relaxing which gave me some time to think about random stuff. I came across this topic during the plane ride to Miami. I was actually thinking about how I haven't written many notes this summer and thought about the last note I wrote: friendship foundation. It got me thinking about best friends and what happens when they like each other. Anyway, enjoy!

Strangers meet, become acquaintances, then friends. If they're lucky and they click, they become best friends. A lot of best friends at some point may think about being more than just best friends. The thought of it can be exciting but also scary at the same time. So the question is, should you or should you not go out with your best friend?

When two people become best friends, I'm assuming they have a pretty solid foundation in their friendship. Now, when those 2 people like each other, there are pretty much only 2 things can happen: they go out or they don't go out.

Best Friends Date Each Other
There are two things that can happen if best friends decide to go out:

  1. It works out and they grow old together
  2. or
  3. They break up and go their separate ways.

Best Friends Don't Go Out
Best friends decide to not take their relationship to the next level because they're both scared that it'll ruin the friendship. It's actually fine if both people feel this way as they both have a mutual understanding in that they shouldn't continue. But if both people like each other and one is more determined to take their relationship further while the other is holding back, that's when there's a problem.

The problem here is that the one with stronger feelings will continue to have these feelings in the long run. They can try to to ignore their feelings, continue their best friend relationship as it was like before, and even try dating other people. But they will keep comparing their dates with their best friend, knowing that they will never be as good as their best friend. Overtime, they can't be around their best friend without having feelings for them. Eventually, they have a choice to make: Stay and wait, hoping their best friend builds up the courage to take their relationship further - or - leave and go separate ways because they know they can't wait around forever.

Ultimately, there are only 2 endings to this story - either they end up happily together, or they go their separate ways. Chances of having the best friend relationship like they used to is very rare. So if two best friends like each other, why not try to make it work? (Yes, I know in some situations, it's not just as simple as "ohh let's go out". There might be complications - long distance, family issues, etc. So this doesn't apply to every best friend scenario.) I've said this before and I'll say it again: Best friend relationships are the best ones because they are the most memorable. Can you ever be sure about the relationship working out? No, because life's a gamble and you may lose sometimes. But you always play to win (Quoted by Frank Underwood - House of Cards). If fate can bring you and your best friend together and have you two falling for each other, it's a pretty good bet to roll the dice.
