Which Of The Relationship Combinations...
Jul 29, 2012

A couple of months ago, I posted a poll in the column to the right of this post asking:

"Which of the following relationship combinations do you think will result in the highest chance of success?"

and of course, the choices were:

A) Similar personality and similar interests
B) Different personality and similar interests
C) Similar personality and different interests
D) Different personality and different interests

Without hesitating, my answer for this question was definitely B. Why, you might ask? Well, I figured that if you have the same personality as someone, then they are exactly like you in terms of the way you handle problems and react to situations. I mean, not that it's a bad thing but I always thought that if I ever met myself, I would hate me because I'm stubborn, impatient, irresponsible, and....yeah, everything else. So for me, couples who have similar personalities was a no-go. Therefore, the only options left were B and D.

Now, if couples have completely different interests, they won't have much to talk about. Even if they were to talk to each other about their own interests, the other person won't be able relate. So option D to me would be no good as the couple will get bored of each other.

Don't get me wrong though, there are always exceptions when it comes to these kinds of questions. But the way I see it, the general trend should be couples who exhibit the personality and interest combinations of option B would be the optimal one. In order from best to worst personality/interest combinations, I would think that options B, A, C, and D is the correct order. However, when I viewed the results of the poll, I was wrong. These were the results from the poll:

where,

A) Similar personality and similar interests
B) Different personality and similar interests
C) Similar personality and different interests
D) Different personality and different interests

The results indicated that the order from best to worst personality/interest combination was: A, B, D, C. This is significantly different from my order which was: B, A, C, D. Therefore, the results did not match my hypothesis.

I cannot explain why my hypothesis was incorrect. Thus, for those of you who voted every other option besides B, please leave a Facebook note on the bottom indicating why you think the other options are the best. Also, let everyone know the order, from best to worst combinations, that you believe is the optimal one and please explain why!

P.S. If you haven't voted, please feel free to do so =]
