This note does not directly relate to relationships but I wanted to publish it anyway since I find it generally important in life. I'm not sure how this topic came up but then again, I'm never really sure how any topics I write come up.
I was on a really long drive home and was thinking about emotions. Just, emotions in general. Why we develop them, why we feel them, and how our actions affect other people's emotions. And then I wondered to myself, if I had to take away an emotion, completely remove it out of existence so that no one would ever feel that one emotion again, which emotion would it be? I was debating on 3 different emotions and surprise, surprise, they're all negative emotions. Let's have a look.
Guilt
Guilt was my first choice when it came to unnecessary emotions. Reason being is because it completely disables a person. When a person feels that they are responsible for something they've done that affected someone's life (could be their own), they are left with the paralyzing emotion of guilt. Why it is so unnecessary is because it prevents a person from moving forward with their life. The only way that they can overcome this guilt is by forgiving themself... which is much easier said than done.
Depression
Depression is not so much of an emotion, but rather a state of mind. When a person feels depressed, all the things they used to love doing doesn't ever seem to excite them anymore. The scariest thought is not knowing when it will end. It can last for days, months, even years. What's even scarier is that sometimes you can't even tell if someone is depressed because they'll look happy on the outside but when they're alone, it's a different story. YouTuber Sky Williams uploaded a video on depression that explains depression and how even the best of us can have it. I truly recommend you to watch.
Regret
A lot of people would feel that regret should be an unnecessary emotion. Although I do believe that it is a negative emotion, regret teaches us a lesson in the long run. Without regret, a person is unable to learn from their past mistakes. When someone feels regret over a past mistake, they know, in the future, how to prevent repeating the same mistake that caused them to be filled with that regret. Don't get me wrong though, regret most definitely isn't a good feeling but it doesn't cripple a person the way guilt and depression do.
Though these negative emotions can cause a lot of pain, getting through them does strengthen a person in the long run. We all make mistakes in our lives. But the ones who have the strength and courage to get up after they have fallen are the ones that become stronger, wiser, and more fearless.
